A Maya city swallowed by rainforest – and a little tricky to reach. Palenque in Chiapas, southern Mexico, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the tomb of King Pakal, jungle waterfalls nearby and, since 2024, its own Tren Maya station. This step-by-step guide takes you from the airport to the ruins and on to San Cristóbal or Mérida. Updated: 01.11.2026 · Auf Deutsch lesen
Palenque at a glance
- Closest airports: Palenque (PQM), with flights from Mexico City AIFA on Mexicana de Aviación; Villahermosa (VSA), with many more flights and about 2–2.5 hours by bus.
- Train: Palenque is the western terminus of the Tren Maya (Campeche, Mérida, Cancún).
- Ruins 2026: 210 pesos INAH + 215 pesos national park fee for foreigners; daily 8 am–5 pm, last entry 4 pm.
- Best season: December–April; rainy season roughly June–October.
- Health: the CDC recommends malaria prevention for Chiapas – see a travel doctor.
- Time needed: at least two nights, better three to five with side trips.
Step 1: choose your airport
You will not find direct flights from Europe or North America to Chiapas, so you connect in Mexico City or Cancún.
| Palenque (PQM) | Villahermosa (VSA) | |
|---|---|---|
| Non-stop routes (per route data) | Mexico City AIFA (NLU) – Mexicana de Aviación | Mexico City MEX (Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus, Volaris), Cancún, Monterrey, Mérida, Guadalajara and more |
| To Palenque | short taxi ride | ADO bus about 2 h 10 min, rental car or shared taxi |
| Best for | the fastest arrival if the schedule fits | flexibility and usually cheaper fares |
Mexicana began flying AIFA–Palenque in January 2024, and a June 2026 report still lists the route. Frequencies vary, so check the current schedule. AIFA is a different airport from Mexico City’s main hub MEX – if you land at MEX, leave a generous buffer or stay the night. Villahermosa is 140–165 km from Palenque depending on the source, and a booking platform lists ADO buses straight from Villahermosa airport.
Tip: if you rent a car, drive only in daylight. Compare cars on Discover Cars.
Step 2: get to Palenque by bus or train
By ADO bus. ADO’s terminal is in Palenque town, about 8 km from the ruins. Guide values from travel platforms (late 2025 to March 2026):
| From | Time | Departures / fare |
|---|---|---|
| Villahermosa | about 2–2.5 h | many departures daily |
| San Cristóbal de las Casas | about 5.5–6.5 h | around 6:30 am, 1 pm, 7 pm, 11 pm; 220–320 pesos |
| Mérida | about 8.5–9 h | around 8:30 am, 10 pm, 10:45 pm; about 1,060 pesos |
Always confirm times on ado.com.mx before you travel.
By Tren Maya. Trains have run to Palenque since 01.01.2024. The station sits on the old airfield between town and Pakal Ná – take a taxi into town. The line continues via Tenosique, Escárcega and Campeche to Teya-Mérida station (outside central Mérida) and on towards Cancún. What we could verify:
- Cancún Airport – Palenque: one direct train a day, about 11.5 hours; 2,226.50 pesos Turista or 2,672 pesos Premier on a November 2026 weekday (traveller report updated October 2026).
- Campeche – Palenque: 2:52 pm to 7:31 pm in the 2025 timetable.
- Palenque – Centenario (Campeche): 895 pesos Turista, 1,074 pesos Premier at the international rate (July 2026).
- Palenque – Mérida: no consistent current travel time published – check the official site.
Book only via trenmaya.gob.mx and its official booking platform. Foreigners pay a higher fare than locals.
Step 3: decide where to sleep in Palenque
Jungle option – El Panchán and the ruins road. Just before the national park entrance, simple cabañas, hostels and small lodges hide in the forest. You wake up to howler monkeys and reach the site in minutes. Expect basic rooms, humidity and insects – bring a head torch and repellent.
Town option. Palenque town is practical: ADO terminal, ATMs, pharmacies, restaurants and plenty of air-conditioned rooms. Colectivos marked “Ruinas” run to the site for about 25 pesos (around 20 minutes, per a May 2026 guide).
Compare stays on Airbnb or Booking.com. November to April is high season, so book ahead.
Step 4: visit the Palenque ruins the smart way
| Ticket | Foreign visitors 2026 | Locals / residents |
|---|---|---|
| INAH (site + museum) | 210 pesos | 105 pesos |
| National park (CONANP) | 215 pesos | 110 pesos |
| Total | 425 pesos | 215 pesos |
Fees are from INAH’s site page and the 2026 tariff list; blogs written before 2026 quote far lower prices. The park fee is paid at the park gate, the INAH ticket at the visitor centre (INAH also sells online). Opening hours: daily 8 am–5 pm, last entry 4 pm. Professional cameras cost extra, and food and pets are not allowed.
- Be at the gate for 8 am. Mornings are cooler – average highs reach about 35 °C in April and May – and day-trip groups arrive later.
- Start with the Temple of the Inscriptions, which holds King Pakal’s tomb.
- Climb the Palace if it is running: since summer 2025 controlled climbs are allowed in groups of 15–20, a 15–20 minute loop along the outer gallery, between 8 am and 2:30 pm.
- Walk to the Cross Group and the Red Queen’s tomb.
- Finish at the site museum, which keeps the original panel from the Temple of the Cross.
Plan three to four hours. A guide helps you make sense of the glyphs – accredited guides carry an official ID, so agree on price and length first. Guided tours with free cancellation are on GetYourGuide.
Step 5: the waterfalls – Misol-Ha and Agua Azul
Misol-Ha, about 20 km from Palenque, drops more than 35 metres into a swimmable pool; a trail leads behind the falls to a small cave. Entry was listed at about 30 pesos in March 2026.
Agua Azul, about 63 km away, is a chain of cascades that look turquoise typically from November to April and brown from roughly July to October. Entry was listed at about 80 pesos. Combined tours leave around 6–7 am and cost roughly 350–550 pesos.
Safety check: both falls lie along Highway 199, a winding mountain road towards Ocosingo where road blockades over local disputes occur from time to time – in 2022 they stranded tour buses during Holy Week. Go in daylight, preferably with a tour, ask about blockades the evening before and never try to pass one. Check the current situation locally.
Step 6: plan your onward route
Option A – into the Chiapas highlands. San Cristóbal de las Casas is about 198 km away on Highway 199: 5.5–6.5 hours by ADO or 7–9 hours on a shuttle that stops at the waterfalls. Toniná near Ocosingo was closed in early 2024 by a land dispute – check before you plan a stop.
Option B – Yaxchilán and Bonampak. These sites near the Guatemalan border are usually reached by boat on the Usumacinta from Frontera Corozal. They were closed from October 2023 due to organised crime; Yaxchilán reopened in March 2024 under community security. Only go with an organised tour and after checking the latest situation.
Option C – Tren Maya to Mérida and Yucatán. Ride the train via Campeche to Teya-Mérida, or take the overnight ADO bus.
Sample route: 5 days from Villahermosa
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Fly to Villahermosa, ADO bus to Palenque (about 2–2.5 h), check in |
| 2 | Ruins at 8 am, museum, afternoon rest at your cabaña |
| 3 | Early tour to Misol-Ha and Agua Azul, back by afternoon |
| 4 | Option A: shuttle to San Cristóbal via the falls · Option C: Tren Maya towards Campeche/Mérida |
| 5 | Explore San Cristóbal or Campeche, continue your trip |
Weather and best season
| Dec–Feb | Mar–Apr | May | Jun–Oct | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avg. high | 29–30 °C | 33–35 °C | 36 °C | 32–35 °C |
| Rain per month | 65–115 mm | 55–60 mm | 145 mm | 205–405 mm |
| Verdict | most pleasant | driest, hot | hottest | rainy, Sept wettest |
Long-term averages from climatsetvoyages.com. Expect some rain in every month.
Health and mosquitoes
- Malaria: the CDC names Chiapas as one of three areas in Mexico where it recommends preventive medication (Plasmodium vivax). Ask your doctor or a travel clinic whether you need it.
- Bites: repellent, long light clothing, mosquito nets – mosquitoes here also transmit viruses such as dengue.
- Insurance: get cover with medical evacuation; we use SafetyWing on longer trips.
Safety in Chiapas
Austria’s motoring club ÖAMTC rates Mexico at security level 2. Rural areas of 19 states, Chiapas among them, are at level 3 (high risk), except tourist zones and UNESCO World Heritage cities; arrive by air or in daylight on toll roads. The US State Department (advisory of 06.09.2024) says “Reconsider travel” for Chiapas and restricts staff travel along the Guatemalan border. Check your own government’s advice and avoid overland travel after dark.

Money, entry and connectivity
Carry pesos in cash for colectivos, waterfalls and small eateries, and decline “pay in your home currency” at ATMs. How to avoid hidden fees abroad is explained on sendwatan.com; the classic traps are in 8 travel money mistakes. Entry rules depend on your passport – Austrians, for example, need no visa for tourist stays of up to 180 days and a passport valid for 6 months on arrival, and the officer decides the length of stay. Signal is weak in the jungle: read Internet and power on the road. More off-the-beaten-path ideas: Iquitos, the Amazon city you can’t drive to and 12 places at the end of the world.
