Mount Batur sunrise trek in Bali: start times, real 2026 costs, guide rules, difficulty, packing list and how to choose the right tour.

lifeisworthtravel · family travel from Vienna

Short answer: the Mount Batur sunrise trek in Bali starts around 3:30–4:00 am at the trailhead in Kintamani, takes about 2 hours up and 1.5–2 hours down, and brings you to the 1,717 m crater rim just as the sun rises behind Mount Agung and Mount Rinjani. As reported in 2026, a shared all-in trek with hotel pick-up, guide and breakfast costs around IDR 500,000 per person, and a local guide is effectively required. It is a moderate hike that most reasonably fit people manage – the hard part is the alarm clock, not the mountain.

Batur is one of the most-watched Bali videos on TikTok: headlamps snaking up a black volcano, a sea of clouds, monkeys at the top and eggs cooked in volcanic steam. This guide shows what the trek is really like, what it costs, how to choose a tour, and how to avoid the classic mistakes. For a full island overview, start with our Bali guide.

Why the Batur sunrise went viral

On a clear morning you stand on the crater rim above Lake Batur, the largest crater lake in Bali, and watch the sky turn orange behind Mount Agung. On very clear days you can also see Mount Rinjani on Lombok. Steam vents near the summit warm the ground, and guides traditionally cook eggs or bananas in the hot steam for breakfast. That combination – a real volcano, a short hike and a huge view – is why it appears in so many travel videos.

The videos rarely show the crowds. In high season several hundred hikers can be on the main trail at the same time. You will not be alone, but the view still feels big. Expectation management is everything: think “shared sunrise on an active volcano”, not “private summit”.

What the hike is really like, step by step

  1. Pick-up (around 2:00 am from Ubud): your driver collects you at the hotel. Sleep in the car if you can.
  2. Coffee stop and trailhead (around 3:30 am): many tours stop briefly for coffee or tea. At the trailhead your guide registers the group and hands out torches if needed.
  3. First hour: a gentle path through fields and forest. Easy, but dark and dusty.
  4. Second hour: steeper, with loose volcanic sand and rocks. This is where people slow down. Take small steps and use your hands on the rocky parts.
  5. Summit (around 5:45–6:15 am): sunrise time in Bali is roughly between 5:45 and 6:30 am depending on the month. Breakfast at the top, often with steam-cooked eggs.
  6. Crater walk (optional): some tours add a short loop around the crater and steam vents. Ask before booking if you want this.
  7. Descent (1.5–2 hours): slippery gravel – going down is harder on the knees than going up.
  8. Back at the hotel: usually around 10:00–11:00 am. Many tours offer a hot spring stop on the way.

Example budget for two people (shared tour): 2 × IDR 500,000 = IDR 1,000,000 for the trek, plus around IDR 50,000 tip for the guide and, if you want, about IDR 2 × 190,000 for a hot spring. Total around IDR 1.4 million – roughly the price of one mid-range dinner for two in Seminyak.

Do I really need a guide?

In practice, yes. Local guide associations control access to the main trails and expect every group to hike with a registered local guide. Hikers who try to go alone are often stopped or pressured at the trailhead. A guide also knows the safe route in the dark and the current state of the volcano. Book through a reputable tour or your hotel, and agree on the price and what is included in writing before the day.

Best time of year for the trek

  • Dry season (about April–October): best chance of a clear sunrise and dry trails. July and August are the busiest months.
  • Rainy season (about November–March): more clouds and slippery paths, but fewer people. Some mornings are still spectacular. Keep a backup day.
  • Full moon nights: easier to see the trail, but also popular with local groups.

Our best time to visit Bali guide explains the seasons in detail. Tip: schedule Batur early in your trip, so you can move it if the weather is bad.

Packing checklist

  • Shoes with good grip – trainers work, sandals do not.
  • Warm layer: it can feel like 10–15 °C at the summit before sunrise, plus wind.
  • Light rain jacket (especially November–March).
  • Headlamp (many tours provide torches, a headlamp keeps your hands free).
  • 1–1.5 litres of water per person.
  • Cash in small notes for tips, toilets, coffee and drinks at the top.
  • Buff or mask for dust on the descent.
  • Phone power bank – you will film a lot.

Safety: active volcano, monkeys and knees

  • Volcano status: Batur is active. Indonesia’s volcanology agency (PVMBG/MAGMA Indonesia) publishes alert levels at magma.esdm.go.id. If the alert level rises, trails can close at short notice.
  • Monkeys: long-tailed macaques wait at the summit for breakfast leftovers. Keep food and sunglasses in your bag. Read our Bali monkeys safety guide.
  • Descent: go slowly, keep your weight over your feet and accept a hand from the guide on the gravel sections.
  • Health: if you have heart, knee or breathing problems, choose the jeep option. Travel insurance that covers hiking is a good idea.
  • Scooter in the dark: not recommended. See getting around Bali for safer options.

Hot springs and how to fill the rest of the day

After the trek many tours stop at the hot springs in Toya Bungkah on the shore of Lake Batur. As reported in 2026, foreign adults pay around IDR 190,000 at Batur Natural Hot Spring. Bring swimwear and a towel. Afterwards you can visit a coffee plantation or the Tegallalang rice terraces on the way back to Ubud, or simply sleep – you have earned it.

Planning a full week? The trek fits perfectly into day 2 or 3 of our 7-day Bali itinerary. For a second sunrise adventure in the east, compare it with Lempuyang Temple – both need an early alarm, so do not plan them on back-to-back days. Staying in Ubud makes the pick-up much easier; see where to stay in Bali and stays on Booking.com.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking the cheapest offer without checking whether the trail fee, guide, breakfast and pick-up are included.
  • Planning the trek on your first morning after a long-haul flight.
  • Wearing only a T-shirt – the wait at the summit is cold.
  • Expecting an empty summit in July or August.
  • Paying unofficial “parking” or “entrance” fees to people without uniform or ticket – the official Kintamani fee comes with a dated ticket.

Entry to Bali – official sites only

Entry rules change. Use only official government websites and avoid paid “agents” that copy their design:

  • e-VOA (visa on arrival online): molina.imigrasi.go.id – Indonesian Immigration. Reported fee 2026: IDR 500,000 for 30 days, extendable once.
  • All Indonesia arrival card (immigration, customs and health declaration): allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id – submit up to 3 days before arrival.
  • Bali tourist levy (IDR 150,000 per person): lovebali.baliprov.go.id – Bali provincial government.
  • Your passport usually needs at least 6 months’ validity on arrival. Also check your own foreign ministry’s travel advice, e.g. BMEIA (Austria) or Auswärtiges Amt (Germany).
